What should I major in to get into wildlife conservation?

Jacinta Moitoso: The 1st answer is a good one, because it ties in with my idea of conservation in other countries. Places like Africa are in desperate need of help with protecting wild life there. Because of politics, people who are poor or starving, because of famine and war, often eat wild animals without one thought of conservation, or the consequences of long term poaching. Famine is really caused by politics more than bad weather, and the disappearance of certain animals is more about poor government practices than about direct animal management. There are lots of angles to get to your goal of helping creatures. So now U can start dual studies of zoology and political sciences. Good luck....Show more

Joan Stavropoulos: Ecology (from οἶκος, "house"; -λογία, "study of") is the scientific study of the ... applications of ecology in conservation biology.

Giovanna Sherlin: You can go with a basic biology degree for more flexibility, or zoology, wild! life management, wildlife biology, etc.

Deangelo Marchak: For the courses in college the comment about making sure the classes transfer is extremely important. Secondly the comment about which courses to take I agree completely with all of those classes were great; I especially liked that they added the GIS course or geographical information system- its similar to a GPS but cooler and WAY more helpful out in the field. About college:Different colleges will have different possibilities. It really depends on how far your willing to go. Im currently in school receiving a Biology Bacholors of Science with a concentration in Zoology and Ecology. But you can also recieve a degree in Environmental Science, Marine Biology, Environmental Studies, Wildlife Conservation, and others.I'm sorry I'm so vague but really you can go anywhere in this field a multitude of ways. I've met leading people in their field of research on specific species that have no formal education in that ar! ea of study. They just had TONS of experience....Show more

Bibi Tyron: Political science. Because wildlife conservation has more to do with politiclics than any thing

Barton Slisz: If you are going to a community college and plan to transfer to a 4 year school, make sure your classes will transfer. Sometimes you can get a "course conversion" list so you know how your classes will transfer. The "zoo and aquarium" degree may be a two-year degree with no credits that will transfer. Do your homework on this.As far as community college courses, look for biology, ecology, zoology, chemistry, GIS...Good luck!...Show more

Joni Ziak: Zoology and wildlife conservation are actually quite different. I would start looking at programs and the course descriptions to see which more closely resembles what you are interested. Here is my alma mater down below.
