Linwood Mccory: If you have a usb port on your tivo and they will format it for you, you sure can. It will only work if they can format it for you. Dish Network lets its customers do that. Call them and ask.
Hunter Beech: I'm not sure why a specific Hard-Drive would be geared towards DVR use.Almost any standard PC Hard-drive can be used with TiVo. Done it myself a couple of times. However: You used the term "External". If you meant an 'external' hard-drive (one that you are holding in your hand), yes....if you meant you want to hook it up to your TiVo as an External Hard-Drive...No.The hard drive would have to be installed inside your TiVo, either replacing the current drive, or as a second add-in drive. Only certain TiVo models can accept a second built-In hard-drive.WARNING: Changing out, or adding a second hard-drive to your TiVo is not an easy task, and takes some doing as far as configuring TiVo to see the added space.WARNING: Do Not EVER take an active TiVo har! d drive and hook it up as an external hard-drive on an XP system (Even to just 'see whats on it'). Windows XP will write something to track-zero of the harddrive (like a cat marking its territory) overwriting TiVos signature and TiVo will not be able to read the drive anymore. Been there, done that. Had to reinstall TiVo software from scratch after that.Hope this is some help...Tom...Show more
Randall Twehous: i think they are trying to keep it specific
