Whats the difference between infant, convertible and booster car seats? Which of them need a car base?

Brittanie Zakutney: The infant carseat is the only one that requires a base. Usually those can be used until the baby is about 22 pounds (or close to one year old). The infant carseat, base, and stroller need to be the same brand in order for you to be able to click the infant carseat into the base and the stroller securely. The convertible carseat can be used from 5 pounds until about 30-40 pounds rear facing (depending on brand) and then most can be used as a forward facing booster. These carseats do not come out of the car for carrying or snapping into the stroller. If you chose a convertible carseat it should be the only carseat your child will need until they transition to a booster seat for much older kids (I think about 4 or 5 years old). A booster seat can ONLY be used forward facing, which in most states it is the law that the baby must be at least 1 year old and 20 pounds but it is now recommended to keep them rearfacing until age 2 for safety reason if you were! to get into a crash. We had an infant carseat when my daughter was a newborn and it was nice to be able to take her in and out of the car without unstapping her and waking her up. At about 6 months her head had reached the top of the carseat and she looked very cramped up and uncomfortable, so we switched her to a convertible carseat. She is now 15 months old, still rear facing, and still using her convertible carseat which she still has plenty of room in. While it was nice to have the infant carseat for convenience when she was younger, paying the $120 for it was a waste just to have to spend another $200 to get two convertible carseats (one for each car) 6 months later. My advice would be to spend your money on getting a really good, comfortable, convertible carseat that will last your baby for years to come. Then get one of the cheaper brand infant carseats. They are no less safe, but just come with less features (no head support, cup holders, canopy, etc) and aren't th! e expensive name brand type. PS- I thought that we would use t! he infant carseat snapped onto the stroller a lot when my daughter was younger because that was the way I had always seen other moms with babies at the malls, etc but honestly I think we may have used that about 5 times the entire time my daughter was in her infant carseat. When she was a newborn we didn't really take her out a whole lot where there weren't carts available that we snapped the carseat onto instead (grocery shopping, target) but then we she could sit up on her own at about 5 months she wanted to sit in the stroller and look out rather than being laid down in the carseat snapped onto the stroller. Some different brands of carseat will still snap onto a stroller of a different brand safely, but I wouldn't spend the extra money to get a 'travel system' just to use that feature.. its definately not worth it!...Show more

Chastity Doderer: Test those infant 'stroller systems'. Alot of them are CRAP to push around with some weight in it. We went straight with ! convertibles seats Sunshine Kids Radians 65's and Evenflo Triumph 65's for our cars. These seats take us from day one to around age 5-7 (or 65 pounds). These are top-rated seats. SK seats are steel-frame like Britax, but not bulky and heavy like Britax. Plus, you can buy replacement covers. They last 8 years. We used baby slings to carry baby in and out of the car. (I used a Slingling pouch sling, and hubby used a ring sling) And we found a great 2nd hand stroller that we love....Show more

Cliff Jacoby: Standard infant seats go to 20 or 22 pounds rear facing only.High weight limit infant seats go up to 35 pounds rear facing only- these are usually grown out of by height before weight.Infant seats comes with bases that are brand specific and can be used with or without the base- leaving the base installed in the car makes it easy to remove the carrier."I really do want to the infant seat for the stroller so we can take the baby wherever" It's best not to cart around a! newborn in a car seat attached to a stroller- it's not the best positi! on for their developing spine. You can buy a stroller that reclines flat and lay the baby down like that, or just use a sling until baby can sit upright alone.Convertible seats- last from 5-65 pounds or even higher depending on model. These give you the best bang for your buck. The Graco MyRide 65 will generally last for 6 years, at $160- that's only $26.67 per year of use- very cheap for a car seat if you ask me! http://www.gracobaby.com/Catalog/Pages/productlist...There is only one convertible seat that has a base- the rest are installed in the car alone. There's a brand new car seat on the market, that can be used from 5-40 pounds rear facing, then until 65 pounds forward facing harnessed, then up to 100 pounds as a high back booster with a height limit of 57". This seat has a base that is installed once and must be used. You remove the base to use it as a booster. http://www.gracobaby.com/Products/Pages/ProductDet... Do watch the video on this link- it shows you all the ! seat features. It is never safe to switch to a booster seat before 4 years and 40 pounds. Why it is safest to rear face until at least 2 years and 30 pounds:http://aapnews.aappublications.org/cgi/content/lon...http://www.car-safety.org/rearface.htmlhttp://www.joelsjourney.org/http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psmUWg7QrC8

Christy Tirabassi: The primary differences are the an infant car seat comes with a base and you can remove it from the car without unbuckling baby and the convertible car seat stays in the car so you have to unbuckle and rebuckle the baby when getting in and out of the car. The infant car seat is good up until the first car seat. The convertible car seat grows with your baby. It goes from 0-1 rear facing and 1 and up until max weight limit forward facing.

Mark Hovanes: You don't use a booster until the child is 3 or 4.And yes the brands need to be the same to work together.
